Preserving Structures That Serve Communities

Institutional buildings require a careful balance of preservation, safety, and functionality. We bring experience and precision to every project, ensuring these important spaces remain dependable and well-maintained for years to come.
Featured Institutional PROJECT
Museum of Science in Boston
Abbot was recently contracted to undertake a complex masonry restoration and repair project at the Museum of Science in Boston. Abbot had completed several smaller projects for the Museum in the past, and had developed a strong relationship with their facilities team.

The Museum initially hired a firm to provide an overall assessment of the building and to develop a schedule of essential work based on safety standards. The firm developed a timeline that identified items requiring immediate attention, and subsequent work to be completed within two to five years.

MAINTENANCE

Responsible maintenance practices call for a visual inspection of a masonry building every year or two to check for obvious signs of deterioration.

As a service to our clients, Abbot provides comprehensive evaluations of the exterior building facade to comply with municipal building regulations.

The City of Boston’s “Facade Ordinance Code” requires that exterior walls and appurtenances of “high rise” commercial buildings whose height is greater than 70 feet be inspected periodically for safety. In fact, the law requires inspection every year for “unoccupied” buildings and every five years for “occupied” buildings. Abbot teams with architect/engineering professionals to help facilitate the practical aspects of the inspection process.
