Weatherproofing Methods and Masonry Restoration, Part 1

Keeping brick or concrete masonry in good condition is an ongoing project for masonry restoration specialists. To keep the façade of a historic building looking as beautiful as the day it was built is no easy task, but our team at Abbot Building Restoration is up to the challenge. We have several tools and methods available to us to maintain and restore the buildings in Boston and the surrounding area. One of our key services is weatherproofing, and we have several ways to protect brick and concrete from the effects of the weather.

Here are four weatherproofing methods we use in the process of masonry restoration and repair.

Sealants and Waterproof Coatings

Applying sealants and waterproof coating to the exterior of a building helps the surface of the masonry to repel water and prevent water damage. Depending on the specific requirements of the building, can use silicone-based, acrylic-based, or elastomeric coatings. We carefully select the right sealant or coating for each building to protect the surface and preserve the look of the façade.

Joint Repair and Repointing

We can also inspect and repair mortar joints between bricks or concrete blocks. Repointing involves removing deteriorated mortar and replacing it with new mortar that is properly mixed and applied to ensure water resistance. For historic buildings, we mix the mortar using modern materials that match the historic materials.

Brick Replacement

In some cases, we need to completely replace damaged bricks. Replacing these bricks ensures that water cannot seep into cracks and cause damage to the mortar and adjacent bricks. As with repointing, we always take the time to carefully select bricks that match the rest of the building.

Flashings and Damp-Proof Courses

Brick or concrete buildings have vulnerable points, just like any other structure. The vulnerable points are often roof edges, windows, and doors. We can install or repair flashings at these vulnerable points to redirect water away from the building. In some cases, we also install damp-proof courses to prevent rising dampness from affecting the masonry.
