In our previous blog post, we started to look at methods for weatherproofing as part of masonry restoration. There are many methods we can use to ensure the best result, and the list of options is longer than we could fit in a single blog. We want to give our new and existing customers the best understanding of our services we can, so we are continuing our list here. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to any restoration project, so we adjust our approach to use the best methods for each building.
Here are four more weatherproofing methods that we use in both historic and modern masonry restoration.
Surface Cleaning and Preparation
In the first half of our list, we mentioned applying sealants and waterproof coatings. However, before we can apply the coating, we have to prepare the surface. This preparation involves thoroughly cleaning the surface to remove dirt, pollutants, and the remains of any old coatings. A clean surface ensures that the new coating will adhere properly and effectively protect the masonry.
Expansion Joints
Many large structures have expansion joints built into the masonry. These joints accommodate thermal expansion and contraction to prevent the brick or concrete from cracking. Maintaining or repairing these joints protects the building and makes the weatherproofing efforts more effective. If the building does not have expansion joints, masonry restoration specialists may add them if possible.
Water Repellents
Water repellants have a similar effect to sealants or waterproof coatings, but they work a bit differently. Rather than staying on the surface of the masonry, water repellents penetrate the pores of the brick or stone. They effectively fill the gaps in the masonry, reducing water absorption while still allowing the material to breathe.
Regular Maintenance
No matter what methods are most effective or appropriate for a particular building, regular maintenance is crucial. It is impossible to keep the weather from having any effect on a building’s façade but maintaining the brick or concrete and the weatherproofing efforts will reduce the likelihood of serious damage.
